Touted as man’s best friend, dogs are a favorite pet for many. After all, dogs are known for being courageous, friendly, great playmates and protective…to name just a few traits. However, adopting a dog also means a variety of responsibilities. Before you adopt a dog, be sure that having a dog is something that the whole family is agreeable to and then carefully consider the following:

The size of your home—do you have enough room for the dog to comfortably run around and play. It is unfair to expect a dog to live its life in a room or very small area.

Time restraints- how much time do you have to devote to playing with and caring for a dog. Most dogs are social creatures and need to be played with. In addition, you will need to have time to run and play with your dag. Most dogs need an hour of exercise a day.

If you have other pets, will they be comfortable with a dog around?

Are you able to afford a dog? Vet care, food, shelter, assorted pet supplies, shots, and other canine care items range in annual cost from $640 -1,250 for a puppy and $440 – $775 for an adult dog.

Dogs require training that can sometime take time for the dog to learn. Are you willing to deal with the stresses of excessive barking, accidents in your home, chewing, shedding, training your dog, etc?

If you are up for all the above, then you are ready to begin your quest for the perfect dog. There are several things to keep in mind when selecting the ideal dog for your family. Since there are hundreds of registered breeds of dogs, not to mention many mixed breeds, the American Kennel Club has put together a list of 7 characteristics.

Sporting dogs—These dogs make great family pets; they enjoy exercise, and are especially fond of hunting/field sports.

Hound dogs- These dogs are highly talented and require frequent exercise.

Working dogs-These canines are intelligent and easily trained. They are frequently used for sled pulling, guarding, and rescuing.

Terrier dogs- These dogs are high energy animals a d do great with children; however, they often require frequent grooming.

Toy dogs- These diminutive dogs are great for people who live in small homes. The dogs are known for having plenty of spunk.

Non-sporting dogs- This group is diverse and difficult to categorize.

Herding dogs- These dogs make great companions and are known for doing just what the name implies.

Adopting the right dog for your household can be one of the best things you ever do for your family. But you should take your time and not rush into having a pet unless you are willing to take the time to train, play and provide for your new family member. After all, with proper care, your pet will be with you for many years. Select your new pet wisely and you will have a longtime dependable friend.

Dogs have been man’s best friend for longer than recorded history. Dogs licked our tears when we were sad, protected us from predators when we were in danger, and provided unconditional love and friendship when no person could. How do we repay them? We dress them up like humans and shoot them into space.
Russian Space Dogs .com is named in honor of the dogs the Soviets sent into space during the 1950s and 1960s to test spaceflight. The Soviet Space Dog, Laika, was the first living earth creature, with a soul, to enter space. In the U.S. we nicknamed her Muttnick. Laika gave her life in pursuit of science when her craft ran out of oxygen.
Enjoy this site full of pictures of dogs dressed like humans, funny and sweet videos of dogs, and service dog heroes. You’ll also find fun pictures of dogs that look like their owners and other people. Please share your photos, videos, and stories. Just send them to us at geckotales @ gmail.com
